Installing your own language in wordpress

Since wordpress uses gettext it has the potential to be used in any language which is an internationalization and localization system used for translations. For each language there will be two files with extension .po (portable object) and .mo (machine object). If you have already installed wordpress in English and like to add your own language then you need to include the language file in your wordpress directory. Here is how you do it.

First go and find out your desired language and then download the installation package to your computer. Now unzip the package, open the folder and go to wp-content where you will see a folder named languages. Just copy that languages folder and by using FTP upload that file to wp-content or wp-includes (wp-content/languages or wp-includes/languages).

All done, you have nuploaded the .mo and .po files to your wordpress directory. Now to make wordpress to use that language file you have to add your language and country code in wp-config.php file. We have previously covered an article about wp-config.php file and editing wp-config.php file. Open your wp-config.php file and at the bottom you will see an area to define your wordpress language just like this.

* WordPress Localized Language, defaults to English.
* Change this to localize WordPress. A corresponding MO file for the chosen
* language must be installed to wp-content/languages. For example, install
* to wp-content/languages and set WPLANG to 'de_DE' to enable German
* language support.
define('WPLANG', '');

Now in define(‘WPLANG’, ”); enter your language code and country code like this define(‘WPLANG’, ‘de_DE’);. That’s it! Now you can see and start using your wordpress dashboard in your own language.
